Pothys "Aalayam Of Silks"


What comes into your mind when you see an alphabet ‘P’ in bold, green colour letter, well you are right, you will immediately think of POTHYS, a family shop just for you serving and honoring every single customers they come across.

POTHY’S continues to keep their traditions alive by keeping their customers satisfied by serving and making every customer feels at home. This tradition was started when weavers to the maharajas of yore, “Pothys” was established 90 years back by K.V.Pothy Moopanar under the name “Pothy Moopanar” to sell Cotton Sarees, Dhoties and Towels woven in his own loom.


In 1977, his son K V.P.Sadayandi Moopanar was able to establish the name and expand the outfit with a self-styled retail showroom at Srivilliputtur, re-christened as "POTHYS". The next launch was in 1986 generated by the next generation who ventured to newer pastures and opened a showroom in Tirunelveli.

It was dreams come true for Chennai shoppers when Pothys opened the largest showroom in Panagal Park, in the year 1999. This six storeyed showroom with its majestic ambiences and gleaming marble and imposing atrium is popularly known as an “Aalayam” for Silks.




The Indian tradition and innovation of Pothys still continues into the 4th generation serving its customers by understanding their desire and passion for new outfits like south Indian pattu sari  in contemporary times and thus introduced variety of ethnic silks Samudrika Pattu, Parampara Pattu,Vastrakala Pattu, Designer Sarees,
Partywear sarees, kancheepuram silk sarees, Arani silk, Indian Wedding Sarees, Embroidery Sarees, bridal collection, marriage silks, casual sarees and ethnic collections like latest designs of chudidar material and salwar materials, readymade and traditional dresses to show their honor and royalty to their customers.




A silk saree, tracing Indian history right from the Harappa-Mohenjadaro period to the freedom struggle movement in the form of painting and zari motifs, has won an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest saree ever made.

Pothys, a popular garment house in Tamil Nadu, has made the 1,276-foot-long saree in four months with the help of 10 weavers and 10 painters.

“The saree contains 141 oil paintings depicting various important events in Indian history, cultural and social life of people in ancient period, dance and music besides portraits of Bharat Mata, Gandhiji, Tiruvalluvar and Swami Vivekananda, the Rama era, Krishna era, the periods of Buddha, Mahaveera, Maurya, Chera, Chola and Pandiya, Rajputs and Moghuls were also captured on the saree,” Pothys Managing Partner S Ramesh said .

The saree, produced at a cost of Rs 22 lakh, also had intricately-woven gold zari, depicting exquisite monuments of India, including Parliament buildin and Taj Mahal. Made in a single piece measuring 1,276 feet in length and four feet in width and weighing 40 kg, the saree was a “tribute to Mother India,” he added.

Officials of the Guinness Book of World Records has accepted it as an offical Guinness World Record, Ramesh said.
