Safe & Fashionable Diwali Clothing

Diwali – is the homecoming of Lord Rama, and is celebrated in India with Diyas, sweets, clothes and gifts. This Diwali go traditional with Cotton sarees, designer sarees, silk sarees, Embellished Salwar Suits, and Lehengas. With very many options to pick from it is important to make sure you wear safe and fashionable clothes during Diwali.

Tips to make sure your clothing is safe during this Diwali:

1. Watch out for your dupatta: It is advisable not to wear the dupatta when you go for the fireworks celebration. Since the dupatta hangs freely on your shoulders and dangerously close to ground level where all the fireworks are.

2. Avoid Patiala salwars: A lot of us buy kurtas and suits for Diwali. Instead of wearing Patiala, go for leggings or jeans because it is safer around fireworks as they are more fitted

3. Saree Draping: Saree is an epitome of elegance for Indian women and what better occasion to wear them than on Diwali? The only word of caution here would be to make sure your saree is tied neatly, and the pallu does not hang loose. Tying a silk saree is easier than a designer saree but the best thing to do in any case is to pleat the saree neatly and stuff one end of the pallu around your waist.

4. Saree Length: The length of the saree should be taken into concern while draping. Tie it a little higher than you normally do so that the lower hem of your saree does not end up catching fire. You can also wear wedges or raised platforms to avoid this scenario.

5. Fire Resistant Material: Who said that there are no gorgeous sarees in fire resistant material? Instead of chiffon and gorgette go for jute, silk cotton or cotton sarees that do not catch fire as quickly.

This Diwali we hope you have a beautiful time with your family and friends! It is important to be safe too. To help you with that we have a wide range of collections in different price ranges. To find the perfect clothing for this Diwali, you can visit our store or log in to www.pothys.com . You can also gift your loved ones a gift card from Pothys for this Diwali!

The Art of Wearing a Saree

Draping a saree is definitely an art. Before you start draping a saree, keep in mind that you must be comfortable wearing it. If you want perfection, practice is the key. Saree Draping requires skill building and practice both. Play with different style drapes and you will master it soon. Most of us consider it to be a very difficult task but here are some tips to make sure your saree is draped very well.

1. Always use many small pins, be it gold or silver color pins (depending on the saree). Small pins make sure to hold your saree and avoid big pins because they tear your saree.

2. For an office look, pinup your pallu as it’s bound to be more comfortable and easily manageable. It also gives a smarter look. For a party look, you can just leave your pallu loose.

3. There are many other ways in which a saree can be draped. But before you pick one style make sure you take into consideration the fabric of the saree, your body type and the event.

4. Petticoat: Make sure your petticoat matches your saree and it’s a perfect fit for you. Ensure it is not too flared and is tied properly. The length of the petticoat also makes a difference because if it is shorter, your legs will be visible and it might look odd.

5. Women who are on a heavier side go for fabrics such as Georgette, Chiffon, and Soft Silk because these will stick to the body and help you look thin. In case of silk sarees, go for Mysore silk, Chanderi silk, Silk Cotton as they are not too voluminous and heavy.

6. Slim women can purchase heavier and stiffer fabrics such as Silk, Cotton, Tussar, Tissue, etc. because these will add some extra volume to your body. If you are slim and tall you can try thick borders and bold prints.

7. If you are short, then go for small borders, simple prints and dark colors. You should avoid sarees with big borders as they make you look shorter.

8. Silk, Tissue, Tussar, Organza and Cotton sarees are very difficult to handle. Make sure it is ironed properly, or else they will look very untidy no matter how you drape it.

9. Keep your heel size in consideration before you start draping your saree.

The perfect bridal lehenga

An ideal wedding dress is a dream for every bride. The Lehenga is a traditional ensemble that has been trending in recent times. There are different types of lehengas from which you can choose. While choosing lehenga for your wedding reception, there are some things that you need to keep in mind. Such as:
Color - Choose a color that will suit you perfectly
·         Very Fair Complexion: If you have a fair skin tone, opt for bright or dark shades such as blue, red, pink and orange. You can also experiment with shades like white and cream.  Avoid grey and brown shades.
·         Fair Complexion: Avoid neutral shades and go for shades such as cream and other pastel colors. Shades of yellow, blue and light pink look gorgeous too!
·         Wheatish Complexion: Most colors suit best on people who have wheatish complexion. Go for colors that complement your skin tone such as red, fuchsia, maroon, neon shades and greens.
·         Dusky Complexion:  Classic blues, bronze, silver, metallic shades & brick red are colors that will look perfect on you. Avoid bright shades like neons.
Body Type
·         Slim: Thin/Slim brides can go for heavy / fluffy lehengas with many choli patterns such as backless choli, deep neck choli and netted shoulder choli or one-sided choli. Zari work & zardosi work are some options that you can look for at your lehenga.
·         Hourglass Shape:  This is the perfect body shape that can pull off any lehenga. Materials like velvet and georgette with any type of cut are best suited on this body type. A-line cut and fish cut also looks lovely on this shape!
·         Heavy on top: Lehengas with jacket and layering at the top using jewelry or dupattas are the best for this body shape.  Go for straight and cuts that are simple and preferably small prints.
·         Curvy: Go for long top s and fluid fabrics. For these shapes avoid pleated or flared clothing and go for sharara cut lehengas or bold prints in single colors.

Trendy Kurta Neck Patterns

The very ethnic Salwar Kameez is a reflection of elegance, simplicity and comfort. As with all clothes it is very important to take your body type into consideration while picking the design. While deciding the neck design, the shape of your face and the body type plays an important role.
There are a lot of ways in which you can stitch your kurta neck designs. Here are some for you!

1. Halter Neckline: The halter neck-line starts of two triangular points of fabric that run from the chest to the back of the neck where it is fastened with the help of straps. For women who are skinny or who have an hourglass figure this neck design would be perfect.   A halter neck salwar kameez design will expose the back entirely so make sure you find the right fit.

2. Boat Neckline:  Made to highlight your collarbones, these necklines look absolutely classy.  These necklines are the best because it’s compatible with almost all body types. If you have a petite frame your collarbones would be one best feature that can be showed off in this neckline.

3. U neck or Scoop Neck: These necklines go with any type of fabric. That’s one of the reasons why this is very popular. Deep U- necklines is best meant for women with small bust line. It’s a perfect neckline for when you want to accessorize a lot.

4. V- neckline: V necklines tend to make you look slimmer. Women with broader frame can totally go for this!

5. Closed Neckline: This neck design has been trending the last few years. This neckline is not recommended for women with a heavy bust. If you want to look stunning in a crowd without any distractions then this is the perfect way to go about it!

1. Make a list:  So, before you set off on your shopping trip, prepare. Review what you already have in your closet and then decide the things that you need. For example, when you go wedding shopping, make a list of the functions and the clothes that you need to buy for each of them. It makes the process of shopping much easier as you know exactly what you are looking for.

2. Set a Budget: Make sure you have a budget in mind once you make the list.  Especially when you are looking to buy a lot, it would be better if you have a rough number that you are willing to spend.

Pongal Collections from Pothys

The most popular and widely celebrated South Indian festival is just around the corner. Pongal is a very important four day long harvest festival grandly celebrated in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is the auspicious beginning of Uttarayan – the Sun’s six month long journey northwards. The Sun, the Earth and the cattle are worshipped on this day as a thanksgiving for an abundant harvest. Pongal is celebrated in the month of Thai (January- February) during which rice, cotton, mustard, sugar-cane and other cereals are harvested.

The word Pongal has two meanings: Pongal is the name of the dish cooked on this day and Ponga means “to overflow”. “Thai pirandhal vazhi pirakkum” - it is believed that all one’s problems will be solved and that good things will come this month. It also signifies the start of the wedding season for the year.

Colors for this festive season:

Red: This color stands for Purity. The most adorned color for weddings is Red. It also associates with strength, courage, optimism and love. Red is a shout out at weddings because it’s bold and bright.

Blue: Blue is the favorite color for everyone. The dark shade of blue signifies trust, intelligence, cleanliness, dependability and authority.

Light blue stands for peace and serenity. Blue looks beautiful for any event. Morning or Evening, blue is definitely a favourite!

Marigold: Marigolds are known as the “Herb of the sun”. A rich and vibrant yellow or a mix of orange and yellow. This color is so beautiful and traditional. This color is named after the flower Marigold and it signifies passion and creativity.

Green: Green stands for nature. This is the perfect color for this harvest season. Green enhances the mood and signifies happiness and a new beginning. Pongal being the harvest festival that is celebrated widely in South India, green is the perfect color for this season!

Some of the rituals are cleaning the house, exchanging gifts and wearing new clothes. Men go for Dhoti sets and women wear lehenga or sarees. Party Sarees under Rs.5000

This holiday season brings in exciting events, get- togethers and parties for all of us. Christmas, followed by New Year’s Eve and a whole lot of festive soirées in between is sure to tempt us to opt for chic and trendy party wear.  It is not surprising that December is one of the most awaited months in the year for all because of the festivities and excitement that come along with it. Especially for women, this month gives a whole load of excuses to dress up and shop for new clothes.
The colour trends keep changing and women always fall short of the right kind of clothes despite their wardrobe being filled with fancy sarees and party wear this season. Keep your wardrobe worries at bay as Pothys is here to help you with colour suggestions!

Red:
The vibrant and bold colour is quite often avoided by many women. But when you know how to match it and accessorize it, there is nothing to worry. A lovely red saree or an anarkali can be paired with a soft beige, which also leaves ample scope for you to choose bold jewellery like big earrings, cocktail ring and a stack of bangles.

Blue:
A beautiful sari in the shade of blue and a dull gold or copper is a classic colour combination which is definitely a day-to-night hero. Whether you love georgettes, nets or cottons the colour is a fail-safe option whenever you have to step out. Style it in two ways- hair up in a bun with long earrings or leave your hair open and wear small earrings.

Pink:
No wonder pink is the most romantic shade for any season. The colour is classically ravishing. When you opt for a sari in this colour, be rest assured that is going to be a high-octane party piece. Mix it with black to spice up your look a little bit. Wear it to a friend’s cocktail party with drop earrings and a box clutch.

Yellow:
If you are looking to make a statement with your sari, then embrace the brightest of the bright colours - A sunny yellow. A simple style tip would be to keep your accessories in neutral colours like beige, brown, silver or gold rather than matching it all too much.

It's Wedding Season!!!

Weddings are an occasion where everyone wants to look their best. Every woman loves getting dressed for a wedding, even if it is not her own! But it can be tricky deciding what to wear to the main events, which are the muhurtham and the reception. Also, the smaller events like the bridal shower, mehendi, nalangu and next-day brunch sometimes also come without a prescribed dress code. Don't worry! We’ve got your back there. In order to avoid all sartorial guessing games, we've broken down the looks, both by occasion and preference.

While the functions vary according to each family and their traditions, most mehendi and sangeeth have a few things in common: it's an evening affair, and the family (meaning ladies of all ages) will be there. Consider keeping your look classic. It's always better to play it safe — while adding your own signature twist. A statement-making, traditional soft silk saree is the perfect showpiece for a mehendi or nalangu ceremony and you can pair it with a traditional potli bag and necklace to add more grace to your traditional look. It's a combination that'll earn praise from everyone around.

For main events like wedding and reception, you can try a lovely kanchivaram saree with traditional motifs and long earrings. Go with classic colour combinations to stand out in the crowd.

This wedding season, Pothys Boutique has stocked up a collection of sarees that are perfect for any wedding that you're going to this season!
