AADI is the monsoon festival month of South India.
The festival pays tribute to water's life-sustaining properties. For the blessing of mankind with peace, prosperity and happiness, Nature worship in the form of Amman deities are carried out to shower Nature’s bountiful grace on human beings. Prayers and pujas are offered to appease the powerful goddesses and seek their protection from the ominous aspects that are often linked with the month. This is an auspicious month when farmers begin to sow and the retailers begin to slash prices!
Aadiperukku is very special in the Kaveri delta. This festival is native to the perennial river basins of Tamil Nadu and major water source areas and is to celebrate the rising water levels due to the onset of monsoon, which is expected to occur customarily on the 18th day of the solar month, Aadi equivalent to the 2nd or 3 August every year. Hence “Padinettam perukku” – Padinettu signifies eighteen, and Perukku denotes rising. On this propitious day, Goddess Parvathi Devi is worshipped by offering different rice dishes. Aadiperukku is a festival of fertility and people of Tamil Nadu particularly women offer prayers. They wear new clothes and perform abhishekham for Kaveri amman.
